Eleven Years is a Long Time

Maddy and me, it's hard to get pictures of me with any of my cats.

This month, Maddy, 11, and I celebrate our 11-year anniversary. I can’t believe I’ve had her for 11 years. She was my first major “purchase” after moving out of my parents’ house. She was also my first real pet (I only had fish before).

Maddy was little ball of grey fur when I got her. A roommate and I adopted her from the Aberdeen Area Humane Society. We co-adopted Maddy, but when I moved out, I knew Maddy had to come with me.

She is my best friend and probably one of the longest relationships I’ve ever had. She is the reason I love animals and the reason I advocate for animals. In the 11 years we’ve been together, I lost my grandmother, moved six times, changed jobs, had several boyfriends and graduated from college.

Maddy and I (and Chaos) watched the towers fall on 9/11. Maddy comforted me when my grandmother passed away. She was the one constant every time I moved. She and Chaos helped me overcome a very bad illness and they gave me the incentive to graduate from college. I owe my life to my cats and without Maddy, I wouldn’t have any cats.

Chaos, Maddy and I are celebrating 10 years together this year. I could go on and on about why I love these cats. But, I’ll leave it with this: I hope for 20 more beautiful years with my furbabies. Cats really do leave footprints on your hear.

  1. A lovely tribute to Maddy and your life together. They really do go through thick and thin with us.

  2. This is so sweet! We know our cats changed our lives. To 11 more years with Maddy!

  3. Gosh, I know how you feel! My Arctic turned 15 last September…about a month after I turned 30. I have had Arctic for half my life! He has been with me through so much!
