Conversations With My Cat

Raven peering at me from atop the stairs.

I love dogs and I really love cats. Each animal has its flaws. With dogs, they are loud. They bark a lot, that’s part of their job, but it bugs me. Some dogs bark more than others, but in general, dogs make noise. Cats tend to be thought of as quiet, like a cat burglar. You think of a stealthy, dainty creature, silently creeping around your home. I think my cat, Raven, lost that memo.

Raven is loud, very loud. He talks constantly. He’s been to the vet and there is nothing medically wrong with him. He is a healthy, large 4-year-old with a lot to say. He growls at strangers or if if someone gets too close to our house. He meows if my phone rings or the TV gets too loud. He meows when he walks around and he meows as he lies down.

Raven follows me around the house and meows the entire way. I can’t get a break from his meows. Maybe he’s so talkative because he was orphaned and I raised. Maybe he needed more of a feline influence in his early years. I’ve read that cats developed their meows to communicate with humans. And multiple studies have proven that cats only meow when humans are present.

I’m not sure what Raven is saying, but I’m sure there are I love yous sprinkled amongst his jabber, and I bet, he thinks the very same thing every time I talk to him.

  1. My daughter’s cat is very loud too. She meows ALL the time while I am on the phone with my daughter, like a toddler wanting attention!

  2. Cats have a lot in common with small children, I read once, people who can’t have cats have kids. I guess the two don’t always mix, maybe they’re just too demanding?
